ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
Calling all students, student groups and staff! In honor of Pattie Hamlin, Nokomis High School, has nominated Taylorville High School to participate in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. If we
can all raise $500 or more, Mr. Hutchison has agreed to represent Taylorville High School in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and be drenched with ice water from
the biggest bucket we can find at THS! We have until Thursday May 9th to raise $500 or more. All donations will go towards research to help find a cure for ALS and also to help pay for assistive devices and technology that people with ALS use daily. Checks may be made payable to the STL ALS Association or cash in an envelope marked ALS Ice Bucket Challenge may both be dropped off at the THS main office. Let’s raise some money to fight this terrible disease and cool Mr. Hutchison off! Please contact Katie Glenn if you have any questions or would like to make a donation to fight ALS. Energy Saving Tip

Your energy saving tip for the weekend is to reuse your towels. The towel you use to dry-off when you’re freshly clean from a shower doesn't need to be washed after each use, so hang it up and use it a few more times instead. When you do wash your towels, dry them separately from lighter-weight clothes, which dry faster than those heavier cottons.

Energy Saving Tip

Your community challenge tip for the day is to wash your laundry in cold water. Almost all of the energy consumed by your washing machine is used simply to heat the water, so switch to cold water, which uses less energy and still gets your clothes clean (unless you’re dealing with oily stains).

Energy Saving Tip

Your energy saving tip for the day is to consider hanging your clothes outside to let the sun do the drying. Not only does this save energy, it also helps your clothes last longer. If you’re still set on using your dryer, be sure to use the auto-dry setting on your dryer so it doesn’t continue to run after your clothes are fully dry.

Your Energy Education Community Challenge tips for this week are all about laundry, everyone’s favorite chore! Run full loads of laundry whenever possible. Washers use about the same amount of energy regardless of the size of the load. If you need to run a smaller load, take advantage of the washer’s small load setting to use less water.

Your energy saving tip for the weekend is to check your ceiling fans. If you changed the direction of your ceiling fans to go clockwise this winter, it’s time to switch them back. When your fans rotate counter-clockwise, it creates a downward flow of air so you feel cooler. Simply flip the switch (usually located at the base of your ceiling fan) to help lower your energy bill.

Be sure to stop by Marisa’s table today to fill out a ticket worth a point in the community challenge and, if you’re interested, talk to her about how to get involved in the challenge. Remember, our involvement in the Energy Education Community Challenge will benefit our school and student groups alike. Student groups have a chance to win either $2,000 or $3,500. The goal of the challenge is to teach us, and our community, ways to make our homes more comfortable, save money on our electricity bills, and reduce our energy use.
